I did a feature on Sam Callahan last August, just a few months after he decided to work on being a solo artist. Previously, Sam had been part of a mixed group managed by Geri Halliwell and Simon Fuller and a new direction in his career was clearly one that had its risks. As a lyric in his debut single 'Runaway Train' says "the risks I'm taking can't go wrong" and so far, so good.

In less than a year, Sam has rapidly built up a dedicated fanbase of 'Callafans' (clever, eh?) after performing at numerous gigs, festivals, open mic nights and events. The announcement of his first headline gig in London had been greatly anticipated with Sam finally getting a full hour set to showcase his voice. His original songs including 'Crazy', 'Find My Own Way' and 'Kinda Girl'  show Sam's promising talent for song-writing and covers by artists including Bruno Mars, One Direction and James Blunt were also performed well. Singing some solo with only his guitar allowed the crowd to really hear Sam's voice whilst those performed with the band had more of a rock feel to them. Despite technical difficulties at the start, Sam proved he is natural-born entertainer, cracking jokes to the audience in between songs. For a first headline gig, Sam surpassed expectations even if I am a self-confessed Callafan myself. Not many artists would have the ability to make their fans feel more like they were at party for close friends and family than 'just a gig' and make sure they took the time to do autographs, take photos and chat to every fan. I look forward to seeing Sam again soon, hopefully at an even bigger headline show. 4 Stars.
